IHM - The Philosophy.

Indian head massage, also known as "Champissage/chāmpi" is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing that has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. In the indian culture, scalp massage is considered a daily grooming routine and passed down through families by the matriarch.

This massage was brought to the West by Narendra Mehta in the 1970s. He came to the UK to train to become a physiotherapist, but was astonished to find out that scalp massage was not included in a full body massage. He'd grew up with chāmpi and realised that there was a gap in the market for a scalp massage incorporating the upper body. He went back to India to study Champissage and returned to the UK to set about practicing Indian Head Massage.

What to
Expect...

The fabulous thing about Indian Head Massage is that there is no need for unnecessary disrobing. This therapy takes place in a seated position, and with a combination of circular movements along pressure points along your upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face.

This massage relaxes the scalp, can help to relieve eye strain and headaches. Different movements are utilised to increase circulation and remove toxins; break down tension nodules and therefore assists pain relief; instil a deep sense of relaxation, invigorate and boost concentration and mental fatigue as well as calming the nervous system to allow more restful sleep.

This therapy can be performed in a chair, so it is particularly suitable for those who are wheelchair bound or the elderly, and can be carried out anywhere. However, as with any holistic therapy there may be some people who are unable to receive this type of treatment due to contraindications (a condition that would be aggravated, cause harm or result in the cross infection of others). This would be discussed with the individual during a consultation and an extra 15 minutes is allocated for the first treatment to allow for a full medical history to be taken.

No oils are necessary during this process which makes it the perfect lunchtime “pick me up” as it can be carried out to suit the time available, allowing you to return to work relaxed, refreshed and full of vitality However, this said the use of certain oils such as coconut, sweet almond and mustard oil can improve skin and hair condition and increase the many benefits of the treatment.

I went to Jeanette for an Indian Head Massage after holding a lot of stress in my back and shoulders. I knew I was in for a treat! Jeanette talked through the treatment and what it would consist of, ensuring I was happy and comfortable throughout the session. The atmosphere of the treatment room and  the state of deep relaxation almost made me fall asleep, it was lush! I left leaving 100% relaxed and will be visiting again for another treatment to try. I would  definitely recommend Jeanette.
