Earthbound Charity Day in Loving Memory of Ben

Originally posted: 24th April 2022

As many of you are aware, at the beginning of the year we had a devastating loss within our family, our daughter’s former partner, who had been fighting Type 1 Diabetes and end-stage kidney failure for over 8 years, grew his wings at the heart-breaking age of 37.

We started a JustGiving page for his funeral in support of Kidney Research UK, and it’s currently at 65% of the total amount we wish to raise. We decided we want to get it to target, (or even better, over target) to celebrate his life and provide a day full of cake, tea, coffee, soft drinks, jewellery and giggles.

For one day only, you will be able to try out some of our wonderful holistic therapies, carried out by Terry and I. Mini treatments of either Reiki, Indian Head Massage or Reflexology will be on offer, for the duration of 20-minutes per person for just £10! All proceeds will be going straight onto Ben's page. Pre-book these treatments today as spaces are filling up FAST!

Ben has been a big part of the Richards family for over 11 years and although we miss him terribly, we’re glad he’s no longer suffering from such awful & debilitating chronic illnesses. This day will truly be about raising awareness for Diabetes and Kidney Disease, alongside sharing memories of such a funny and caring guy.

Around 40 percent of people with diabetes could eventually develop diabetic kidney disease, which is also known as diabetic nephropathy. It is now the leading cause of kidney failure in the UK – with around 20 percent of people starting dialysis in the UK having the condition. We’re hoping these donations will raise awareness and help kidney research to provide help and fund new treatments for people who are struggling as Ben did.

A man by the sea, with arms wide open and a great big smile
Ben on holiday in Fuerteventura 2011 - His favourite photo to look back at.

Ben had a heart of gold and extremely cheeky characteristics! He developed diabetes in his teens and had always fought this awful disease with a smile on his face. He approached it all with a dark and sarcastic sense of humour, never letting it keep him down for too long. As time went by, his diabetes presented extra complications such as Diabetic Myonecrosis, a rare, muscle-wasting condition, Diabetic Retinopathy whereby he lost his peripheral vision, and eventually end-stage kidney failure.

Through hours of dialysis, countless appointments, fluid restrictions of just a litre a day, and even the loss of his lower limbs, Ben continued to work towards the end game of a kidney & pancreas transplant and being strong enough to walk without supportive aids. He dreamed of playing football with his nephew and getting his life back to some normality. He worked tirelessly at the amputation rehabilitation centre - The Maltings, and had a special place in the team's heart, but the odds were stacked up against him and he lost his fight too soon, just 5 days after his birthday.

Ben, Myself, Danni, Terry, and the family couldn't have thanked the renal & diabetes teams at New-cross Hospital, Wolverhampton enough as they tirelessly helped Ben and Danni through this tough battle, they became an extended family that we will always hold close to our hearts. We will also have a little box whereby you can pop a donation that we will give to Jenny and the team in the Chronic Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis unit. Those amazing people put up with all the struggles of the patients under their care and do it with a smile, total compassion, and love! We’re so grateful Ben had them in his life even if it was for such a short time.

There will be no restrictions on how many treatments you would like, just ensure you pre-book them in advance to avoid disappointment. We will have a table full of our beautiful, handmade, crystal jewellery and all the proceedings will go to Kidney Research UK in such loving memory of our Ben!
